SkillDorm E-learning Solution

The Client: Rivet Software

The Scope: The goal of this project is to create a content-rich platform that enhances the online learning experience for users. It would enable learning partners to intuitively curate their learning materials, making them relevant to the local context in which users are learning.

The Objective

Personally, I’ve always been inspired of design teams working for various Online Learning Platforms like Cousera and Udemy Firms. Also I myself am a regular user of online learning platforms. Fourth of my skills have been learned from online courses. But not everyone, as I have, have benefited from it or completed. That’s because there’s a gap in the experience that people have when they learn online compared to physical class learning.

We aimed to Create an e-learning app that goes the extra mile by helping users choose the right career path, focus on important skills, and keep track of the shifts in the job market while providing more localized learning contents.

My Role & Contributions:

I led the design of a complex e-learning platform, creating a visual strategy for Skilldorm, user journeys, and branding. I also managed the design process of the project's websites, marketing and branding artifacts, consolidating individual visions and brand awareness across the entire programme to ensure unified, excellent user experience within the platform.

This case study covers only parts of my contributions during the months of design process focusing mainly on my role within the project. I retracted or changed portions of findings to conceal any confidential information.

Process & Methodology:

In leading the UX design methodology, the focus is on the end user throughout the design process. This approach ensures that the developed solutions are not only functional but also resonate with users, providing meaningful and engaging experiences. By prioritizing research, iteration, and user feedback, this methodology supports the creation of effective and innovative design solutions tailored to user needs and preferences.

  • Discover — Research Phase
Understand the initial situation or challenge. Define what additional knowledge is needed. Figure out how to obtain it. Then go all out, talk to people and do more homework and research.

  • Define — Synthesis Phase
Understand and make sense of our research data to define whether we are solving the right problem and phrase our vision accordingly.

  • Develop& Prototype — Ideation Phase
Get into the solution mode by evaluating ways and means to solve the core issues we have deduced from our research synthesis.

  • Deliver & Iterate — Implementation Phase
Design, craft, develop or do whatever it takes to turn your ideas and potential solutions into something tangible. Build, test and fail to learn and to do it again.

Users faced challenges in:

Takeaways from user research and stakeholder interviews inform the design challenges moving forward:

  • Content Discoverability: Difficulty locating relevant information and understanding what content to expect before enrolling in a course.

  • Course Completion: Confusing navigation and a laborious user interface made it hard for users to stay engaged and complete courses.

We needed to rethink the platform’s information architecture to improve content discoverability and create a more intuitive navigation system.

Target Audience

  • Employees with full-time jobs

  • College students

  • Learning partners

  • Educational institutions

Engagement Challenges and Solutions: Traditional schools and online platforms often struggle with user engagement, leaving many students unmotivated. Our primary challenge was to decrease user attrition—many users would buy a course but fail to return, feeling disconnected from the platform.

To address this, we implemented two key solutions:

1. Preview & Transparency: Offering a short, free preview of each course and a clear outline of learning outcomes. This transparency helps users feel informed and invested in their choices.

2. Gamification & Community: Incorporating game elements like reward points and levels to boost enjoyment, motivation, and engagement. Integrating this with a social community provides competitive elements that attract younger learners.

Through these strategies, we designed an online learning platform that engages users effectively and motivates them to acquire new skills actively.

Intuitive Interface for Discovering Relevant Courses

Key UX Improvements

Admins lacked visibility into user engagement metrics, making it difficult to track trends, assess course performance, or identify areas for improvement. This limited the platform’s capacity for data-driven decision-making.

We built a robust admin dashboard featuring real-time analytics on key metrics, such as user engagement, course completion rates, and time spent on each course. The interface included data visualizations to make insights actionable and easy to understand.
